Is it necessary to use a resistor to disconnect the capacitor. I know that I needed to find the capacitor before they contact me to calculate. However, it is of sufficient strength to lift the capacitor?

I suggest you keep. You could cap it off to destroy. And satisfy even the use of resistance. Connect between positive and negative side of the lid for about 30 seconds.
